Automating physical access with Axess Gatekeeper smart turnstiles links your on-site physical gates directly to the Palisis booking engine. This setup ensures fast, hands-free guest validation and keeps admissions flowing smoothly.

This guide walks you through the essential configurations required across your Palisis BackOffice account, products, and physical terminals to ensure a flawless go-live.

What does it mean?

Connecting your Axess Gatekeeper turnstiles requires a few specific settings at the account (owner) level. These configurations establish a secure communication channel between the physical hardware and your Palisis product rules, ticket databases, and settlement reports.

What should I do?

Account & Product configuration

While the integration works smoothly with standard Palisis accounts and products, there are several crucial operational rules to establish during initial setup:

External vouchers & barcode patterns

  • Unique code requirements: If you create external voucher blocks (e.g. from partner networks, resellers, or corporate groups), ensure every external voucher block is entirely unique, f.e.: for numeric types, use different numeric ranges.
  • Duplicate barcode patterns can lead to validation conflicts and unexpected gate rejections.

Check-in behaviour

  • Prevent pre-validation: Ensure ticket products are not issued with automatic check-in prior to arrival. Actually, bookings for a specific date are not automatically checked in.
  • The gate acts as the physical redemption point. If a credential has already been marked as checked-in elsewhere, the gatekeeper will consider it already used and will remain closed.

Price plan usage limits

  • Enforce single vs multi-scan limits: Ticket usage rules are strictly respected by the terminal. If a price plan allows admission two times, the guest can scan through the same gatekeeper twice. Verify your price plan validation counts so guests cannot enter more times than intended.

Check-in & voucher redemption settings

The Axess gatekeeper enforces the global check-in and redemption rules defined in your back-office:

  • Customise to your operational needs: Review your arrival-window allowances, lead times and redemption policies with your Palisis onboarding specialist. Bear in mind the terminal cannot reschedule bookings, so tickets and vouchers must be either valid or invalid.
  • Consistency across devices: The gate processes mobile and printed QR codes using the same dependable business logic as handheld Palisis validator devices.

Product restrictions (assigning terminals to specific products)

If your venue manages multiple distinct areas, exhibitions, or routes (e.g., standard admission vs. rooftop panoramic deck), you can restrict specific Axess turnstiles to designated operation lines:

  • Prevent wrong-door scans: A terminal mapped to Product A will reject tickets purchased exclusively for Product B, preventing guests from entering the wrong area.

Unattended User Setup

Every automated terminal requires a dedicated Unattended User in Palisis. This background system user authorises API requests from the gate and maintains automated accounting integrity. The unattended user should be available and already created for your account before the go-live.

Why is an unattended user required?

  1. Automated midnight cash settlement: Unattended users close and reconcile sales shifts automatically at 23:59 every night. Without this user type, device shifts could stay open indefinitely.
  2. Gate registration: The unattended user processes registrations silently in the background during the initial device barcode scan.
  3. Standardised naming convention: These users follow the structure unattended+[OwnerID]@palisis.com (for example, unattended+18717@palisis.com).

Your onboarding specialist will provide you with the API credentials; keep them on hand. They will be entered directly into the terminal's web interface during on-site setup.

Terminal setup

Physical configuration is performed directly through the Axess web browser management interface.

To connect to your gate, ensure your commissioning laptop is on the same local subnet as the gatekeeper, enter the terminal's local IP address into your browser, and log in. We’ll show how to find the IP and set up the terminal locally in the article Axess Gatekeepers terminals | How to set up the terminal.

Good to know

  • On-terminal service mode access: If you need to check local network parameters without a laptop, tapping the terminal touch screen five times in rapid succession opens the on-device diagnostic menu. Ask your Palisis onboarding specialist for the passcode.

FAQs

Can a visitor print a ticket or receipt directly at the turnstile?

No. Axess gatekeeper units operate strictly as validation and admission terminals. They do not incorporate paper printers. Guests must present a digital ticket on their mobile device or a pre-printed voucher.

What should on-site staff do if a valid booking is rejected?

Check that the ticket was not already validated earlier in the day or checked in through an admin portal. If the problem persists, cross-check the time slot on the booking against your back-office operation line schedule.
